Cardiac Electrophysiologist

Dr John Hayes is a Director and Founding Member of the Queensland Cardiovascular Group. He is a member of the Wesley Research Institute (previously St Andrew's Medical Institute). He is currently a serving member of the Wesley Medical Research (WMR) Research Committee. He has served as the Deputy Chairman of the Uniting Health Care Board, overseeing Health Services for the Uniting Church throughout Queensland, including the St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, The Wesley Hospital and The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital.

Dr John Hayes practices as a Consultant Cardiologist, with special interests in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology and cardiac arrhythmia management.

Dr John Hayes and Dr Wayne Stafford were instrumental in the establishment of the leading Cardiac Electrophysiology Service at the St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital in 1993.

The unit has set the standards for many years, leading in the clinical practice of cardiac electrophysiological testing, curative radiofrequency ablation procedures for all arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation ablation. We also lead and innovate in the field of cardiac pacemakers and implantable defibrillators (ICD) through involvement in clinical research. The unit has led in the innovative field of biventricular pacing to promote cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) for patients with heart failure. Through collaborative partnerships, St. Andrew's Electrophysiology Service leads with radiation reduction having the only installed St Jude Medical MediGuide system in the southern hemisphere and the only Boston Scientific Rhythmia high resolution 3D mapping system in Queensland. The service continues to grow, performed over 1000 procedures annually. The unit is involved in an annual audit process which continues to monitor and confirm a quality service with outcomes among the best in the world, along with safe practice and low complication rates. The Unit continues to be involved in innovative clinical research, publications, teaching, sub specialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and the highest quality outcomes for their patients.

Dr John Hayes is a Graduate of the University of Queensland in 1982. He holds Fellowships with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Cardiology and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He undertook additional cardiac electrophysiology training at The Prince Charles Hospital after completing his postgraduate degree. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society, the pre-eminent international organisation in cardiac electrophysiology and pacing. He has current Visiting Medical Officer accreditation at the St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, the Holy Spirit Northside, the Greenslopes Private Hospital, The Wesley Hospital and the Mater Private Hospital.
