Dr Lorcan Ruane

Dr Lorcan Ruane practices as a general cardiologist with formal specialisations in echocardiography and cardio-oncology.

He is skilled in all aspects of echocardiography including transthoracic and stress echocardiography, as well as transoesophageal including advanced 3-D imaging.

Dr Ruane is one of only a few cardiologists in Australia to have specific training and be formally qualified in the emerging field of cardio-oncology – the care of cardiovascular health in patients with cancer. Many old and new cancer therapies affect heart function and, as more patients in the modern era now live with or even survive their cancer, cardiovascular disease then becomes their leading long term health issue. Dr Ruane is passionate about increasing awareness of this important area of unmet need in Queensland.

Dr Ruane completed an undergraduate science degree at the University of Queensland before undertaking his medical degree at the University of Sydney. During medical school he began conducting cardiovascular research, publishing scientific papers and presenting at national conferences. He also won university prizes and scholarships for his work. He returned to Brisbane and completed all his junior and physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) before proceeding onto cardiology advanced training at both the RBWH and The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH). After achieving his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Cardiology) Dr Ruane undertook sub-specialty training in advanced echocardiography at TPCH and then travelled to London, United Kingdom (UK), where he completed a clinical fellowship in cardio-oncology at the prestigious Royal Brompton Hospital, helping to deliver cardiovascular care to patients of the UK’s leading cancer hospital, the Royal Marsden.

Research and scientific writing have always been an important part of Dr Ruane’s work. He has published multiple research papers and presented his work at national and international conferences.

Above all, Dr Ruane’s most valued skill is his ability to communicate and connect with his patients. He is dedicated to optimising cardiovascular health through an evidence based, patient-centred approach.
