Queensland Cardiovascular Group (QCG) is proud to congratulate Professor William Parsonage as President of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ), commencing his term in August 2026.
At this time, QCG would also like to acknowledge Dr Mayanna Lund, the CSANZ outgoing President, and her contribution to cardiology in Australia and New Zealand. Elected in 2023, she became the first female New Zealander to lead CSANZ, building on a career as a consultant cardiologist at Middlemore Hospital since 2001 with a strong focus on improving cardiac care access for vulnerable communities, particularly Māori and Pasifika patients across South Auckland. Dr Lund will formally hand over the presidency to Professor Parsonage at the Society’s AGM in Sydney this August, marking the beginning of his two-year term at the helm of the peak body representing cardiology health professionals across Australia and New Zealand.
It’s the culmination of a career built on both clinical excellence and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for patients. A graduate of the University of Nottingham Medical School, Professor Parsonage completed a Doctor of Medicine researching chronic heart failure before relocating to Brisbane in 2000 to finish his cardiology training at the Prince Charles Hospital, followed by fellowships at the Queensland Heart Failure and Transplant Unit and The Prince Charles Echocardiography Department.
Since then, he has become one of the state’s most respected cardiologists: a Director of QCG, a Senior Staff Cardiologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Visiting Cardiologist at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside. Over 15 years ago, he established Australia’s first dedicated multidisciplinary clinic for pregnant patients with heart disease at RBWH, a service that continues to support some of the state’s most vulnerable cardiac patients. As Clinical Director of QUT’s Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation since 2018, he has also worked to ensure that research findings translate into real, measurable improvements in care.
His research focuses including faster and safer chest pain diagnostics, atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and maternal heart disease, have shaped clinical practice guidelines both here and internationally. Professor Parsonage brings years of leadership experience to the CSANZ role, having served as a Fellow, Board Member, and previously as Chairman and Secretary of the Society’s Queensland Branch.
Honouring a legacy that made this moment possible
This appointment carries particular significance for QCG. The last Queensland cardiologist to lead CSANZ was the late Dr James “Jim” Cameron AM, who served as President from 2010 to 2012. Dr Cameron was a Founding Director of QCG and its Managing Director until 2019, a pioneer of stenting and angioplasty in Australia, and a mentor to a generation of cardiologists, including Professor Parsonage himself. His influence on QCG’s culture, one centred on compassion, patient experience and clinical excellence, continues to shape how our specialists practise today.
It feels fitting that, more than a decade after Dr Cameron’s term, another QCG cardiologist steps into this bi-national leadership role. It’s a reminder of the calibre of clinical leadership that has come out of this practice, and of the mentorship and standards that connect one generation of QCG cardiologists to the next.
Please join us in congratulating Professor Parsonage on this outstanding achievement. We’re proud to see one of our own shaping the future of cardiology across Australia and New Zealand, and we look forward to seeing his impact over the next two years.
