The QCG Atrial Fibrillation Institute

The QCG AFib Institute

The Atrial Fibrillation Institute has been proudly established within the Queensland Cardiovascular Group (QCG) to provide a focussed, specialist service for people with Atrial Fibrillation. With a team of experienced Cardiac Electrophysiologists (Cardiologists who specialise in Atrial Fibrillation and other heart rhythm problems), the Institute is becoming Queensland’s Centre of Excellence for people with Atrial Fibrillation.

With medical clinics in various physical locations throughout South East Queensland along with remote telemedicine services, association with leading private hospitals, and access to the latest medical technologies, the Atrial Fibrillation Institute will provide access to the most up-to-date, evidence-based services for patients with Atrial Fibrillation, and their community of family members, referring doctors and professionals that support them.

Director Dr John Hayes said, “At QCG we have been leading the way with Cardiac Electrophysiology services for 30 years. We are excited to further enhance our management of Atrial Fibrillation for our clients with the commencement of a dedicated Atrial Fibrillation Clinical and Research Institute. This will deliver the best experience, both in terms of care and outcomes, for our clients”.

An innovative Model of Care for AFib Management

AFib is a complex condition, that many patients don’t understand well. The AFib Institute was established to create better outcomes for patients with AFib, using an innovative new model of care. Our new model of care includes a digital patient education program and follow up by cardiac nurses. To date, over 500 patients been through the new clinic model, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly excellent.

Access to the Latest Technologies in AFib Diagnostics and Treatments

The field of Cardiac Electrophysiology is driven by advances in medical technology – in advanced software and programming, in lab equipment and devices. Our team works closely with the leading international medical technology companies, and with their international teams to bring new atrial fibrillation technologies and training opportunities for our patients.

We keep up with the latest evidence-based treatments and technologies, working closely with researchers and industry.

Digital Tools and Resources for all Patients

We believe in empowering our AFib patient community through easy-to-access education to understand how to manage and treat atrial fibrillation, in between face-to-face consultations with our specialists.

We have developed printed packages of patient information resources, as well as multiple digital resources such as a video series introducing our specialists and explaining cardiac procedures. Patient educational content is freely available across social media platforms and our YouTube channel, and via email once enrolled as a patient.

Procedure Recovery Supported by Cardihab

The Atrial Fibrillation Institute has developed a unique, dedicated Atrial Fibrillation partnership program with Cardihab for managing risk factor management and lifestyle changes of our patients.
Cardihab® is a digital health company that exists to help patients reach optimal health when at risk of, or living with, heart disease. Their scientifically validated Digital Cardiac Rehabilitation (DCR) solution uses smartphone apps and web portals to give our clinicians the ability to deliver more convenient, flexible and engaging cardiac rehabilitation services to patients.

Long Term Patient Outcomes Driven by Real Data Insight

The AFib Institute uses the Clinician Insights tool to collect baseline and ongoing patient data to help monitor clinical outcomes and changes in a patients’ AFib over time and inform long-term management plans.

Dedication to Research and Education

Our Doctors host multiple education events and training for GPs, specialists and other referrers throughout the year, both in person and online. We work with a number of other specialists and education providers to ensure our CPD meets the highest standards.

Our team are extensively involved in Australian and International multicentre trials to advance knowledge and treatments for Atrial Fibrillation. Some of these include:

  • COMFORT Study
